We are arranging a special day in Gt Yarmouth to visit an exhibition of Ron King’s work at the new Skippings Gallery, to hear about the Flipside Festival and the Yarmouth Preservation Society, and enjoy a Greek Taverna lunch and the chance to visit four artists’ studios a stone’s throw from each other.

Our day in Yarmouth starts at an exhibition of Ron King’s work at the Skippings Gallery. This exhibition testifies to Ron King’s preoccupation with Brazil’s infamous bandits of the 1930s. Born in Sao Paulo, King lived in Brazil until the age of 12, when he had to leave home for boarding school in England. But Brazil and its culture never left him and for decades, alongside all the books, prints and sculptures he has made, much of his work, including this unique and impressive collection of bandit figures, has been inspired by Brazilian folklore. The exhibition of life size wooden sculptures, will be accompanied by archive material from 1930s Brazil, and a selection of King’s prints and artist’s books. At 84, King continues to work and create in his studio on the coast of West Sussex, still producing books and focussing on large wooden outdoor sculpture.

Ron King will be in the gallery to talk to us about his work, on show as part of the Flipside Festival which is supported by EAAF. We will also be hearing from Genevieve Christie about the future of the Flipside Festival in Yarmouth and Lowestoft and from the Yarmouth Preservation Trust about their ambitions for Skippings Gallery, a new art gallery and studio in a converted 18th century Merchant's house.

Lunch follows at Toni Ponis Columbia Taverna, which offers fabulous Greek seafood and vegetarian dishes. This will be a meze lunch, with a number of marvellous dishes to share, a soft drink, dessert, tea and coffee.

After lunch we head for the industrial area of the docks, off Admiralty Road, where artists Martin Battye, Katarzyna Coleman, John Kiki and Brüer Tidman have generously agreed to open their studios for us. We will split up into small groups to meet the artists and look at their most recent work.

This trip promises to be an adventure and we hope it will reveal new territory for many of us come along, Angela and I will guide and look after you on the day!

Tickets cost £28 pp and include talks, Open Studios and 2-course lunch with soft drink & coffee. A map showing the art venues, taverna and suggested parking locations will be provided with your ticket.
