Revealing the secret life of René Magritte's masterpiece.

In early 2016 Conservator Alice Tavares de Silva examined a painting by Magritte, La Condition Humaine (The Human Condition) 1935, in preparation for the loan of the work to a retrospective exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, which then travelled to the Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. Puzzled by the edges of the painting, she did some further research and, as a result, made a surprising discovery.

The investigation of what lay beneath the surface received international news coverage prior to the departure of the painting. To celebrate the painting's return to Norwich, this event provides an opportunity to hear the story of what was revealed from Alice Tavares de Silva and Dr Giorgia Bottinelli, Curator of Historic Art, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, as well as the chance to see the painting La Condition Humaine, which will be the focus of a special display.

Tickets £10 per person. To book please email info@eastangliaartfund.org.uk

La Condition Humaine was given to the Norwich Castle Collection by Sir Robert and Lady Adeane, who also gave the marvellous Adeane Bequest of 20th century works of art to the East Anglia Art Fund in 1993.
