Come with us to see the ground-breaking retrospective of visionary artist and designer Tirzah Garwood (1908–51).
Director Jennifer Scott will welcome us to Dulwich Picture Gallery before we go into the exhibition Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious. This is the first time the full extent of her output has been shown, giving these captivating works the critical examination and public showcase they deserve. The exhibition includes works by Garwood's husband, Eric Ravilious, to draw out their shared interests and thematic similarities. Despite losing her husband, raising their three children and battling with ill health, Garwood continued making wood engravings and wrote an autobiography: Long Live Great Bardfield. She began to paint oils and continued with these during her second marriage to radio producer Henry Swanzy. In her last year, which she called ‘the happiest year of her life’, she painted and added to her evocative collection of earlier wood engravings and patterned paper designs, for which she is much admired.
After lunch we will return for two talks. Andrew Moore will talk about the UK’s first purpose-built art gallery, designed by John Soane to house the Dulwich collection. The Gallery was completed in 1817 and houses a wonderful collection of works by European and British masters including Rembrandt, Cuyp, Murillo, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Emma Hazell will talk about John Soane and his architecture.
There will also be an opportunity to see the Sculpture Park featuring works by Rob and Nick Carter, Bronze Oak Grove (2017) and loaned works by Li LI Ren and Yinka Shonibare.
Tickets are £65 per person and include exhibitions, talks and lunch. Event hosted by Andrew Moore and Emma Hazell.
