Join us for an exclusive opportunity to hear Dr Giorgia Bottinelli, Curator at Norwich Castle, talk about her current exhibition Catherine Maude Nichols: Making her Mark.
Catherine Maude Nichols (1847-1923) was born in Norwich and lived all her life in the city. A prolific and gifted artist, she was able to sustain a successful professional career - unusual for a woman of the time - and deserves to be better known today.
Nichols - who also wrote poetry, essays and fiction and was a fierce supporter of animal rights - was a particularly accomplished print maker, producing drypoint prints of the highest quality. This talent led her to become only the third woman to be elected a Fellow of the Society of Painters-Etchers, and she exhibited her work in Norwich, around the UK and abroad.
This exhibition showcases a range of Nichols' work, with a particular focus on her drypoint etchings, but also displaying watercolours and drawings. Detailed evocations of Norwich views sit alongside atmospheric, at times brooding, images of Norfolk's reed beds and meadows, while scenes from her travels include watercolours of Cornish cliffs and prints of a Chateau near Fontainebleau and Bristol's suspension bridge.
Giorgia's talk is a wonderful opportunity to discover the work of this talented artist who was determined to live life on her own terms. Afterwards, there will be time for tea and cake and to see the work on show. Tickets are £15 per person and include talk and refreshments.
Event hosted by Amanda Geitner and Emma Hazell.
