Join us for this truly memorable visit to The Manor at Hemingford Grey. Constructed in the 12th Century, it is possibly the oldest continually inhabited house in the country.
Bought just before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 by Lucy M. Boston, it was the inspiration for the Green Knowe children’s books, illustrated by her son Peter. Lucy’s daughter-in-law, Diana Boston, still lives there and will lead our tours.
The day will start with tea and coffee before dividing into two groups. The first group will have the opportunity to tour The Manor and the beautiful gardens, including a wonderful array of irises. The second group will visit nearby Studio House, built for the artist Elisabeth Vellacott (1905-2002), now the home of renowned art historian Frances Spalding. The house was designed by Peter Boston – architect, illustrator and inspiration for the character of Tolly in the Green Knowe books. The A-frame shape and cedar shingle used for the house were dictated by an extremely limited budget. Frances describes it as “delightful in summer, moody in bad weather and testing in winter.”
We are thrilled that both Frances SpaIding and Ian Collins – who gave the EAAF Annual Lectures in 2023 and 2024 respectively - will be with us throughout the day to provide some insights into the world of East Anglian art and artists in the 20th Century.
We will meet for a buffet lunch at The Cock before returning in our groups to The Manor or Studio House. The day will finish by 4pm.
Tickets are £50 per person and include refreshments, lunch and tours.
