Revealing stunning sculptures, textiles, ceramics, and ivory and shell regalia, Fiji: Art and Life in the Pacific will take us on a journey through the art and cultural history of Fiji since the late 18th century.

Curated by Professor Steven Hooper, the exhibition will feature over 270 works of art, including European paintings and historic photographs. The works range from exquisite ivory pendants to a newly-commissioned double-hulled sailing canoe (above), built in Fiji for the exhibition in Norwich.

Fiji has succeeded in maintaining and adapting many of its proud cultural traditions and today woodcarvers and artists continue to produce kava bowls and decorated barkcloths, indeed in the vibrant Pacific fashion scene designers are using barkcloth to make gowns and wedding dresses!

Our experience of Fiji will begin at 1.45pm for 2.00pm with a guided tour of the exhibition and then some time for us to explore the works on our own. Tea and cake at 3.30pm will be followed at 4.00pm by a wonderful opportunity to hear Professor Steven Hooper talk about the development of the exhibition and the history of his life and work in Fiji. The event will finish by 5.00pm.
