We are delighted to welcome Paul Coldwell, practicing artist and Emeritus Professor in Fine Art at the University of the Arts London (UAL), to present a talk on Paula Rego - Printmaker.
Paul worked with Paula Rego (1935 - 2022) on all her etchings between 1987 and 2006, including the Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan and the Abortion prints, and their friendship continued for the rest of her life. He has written on her work on numerous occasions including The making of Paula Rego’s Nursery Rhymes (published in the Impact Printmaking Journal Spring 2020), contributed Paula Rego- Graphic Technique- in Paula Rego The Complete Graphic works, (Thames & Hudson) 2003 and wrote the catalogues for Paula Rego-Printmaker. Talbot Rice Museum, Edinburgh 2005 and Honore Daumier & Paula Rego, Casa das Historias Paula Rego, Portugal 2013.
This illustrated talk focuses on the role of printmaking within Rego’s overall practice and offers a unique insight, gleaned from such a close working relationship, into how these prints came into being. The talk will explore broad themes around Rego’s prints including her relationship to graphic traditions, her changing working methods and the importance she placed on her prints. Rego’s prints are singular works, essentially pictures fully realised through the medium of print, leading the eminent critic Robert Hughes to write:
Rego’s etchings, and in particular the ‘nursery rhymes’, have every claim to be ranked among the outstanding feats of graphic imagination of our time. (Hughes 2007)
Tickets are £20 per person and include talk, tea and cake.
