Translating John Crome: Through Sight to Insight is a new publication which explores the ways in which Crome’s work can be re-assimilated into contemporary perception and consciousness. This marvellous book will be launched with a discussion of their project by editors Andrew Moore and Clive Scott, in-conversation with Dr Giorgia Bottinelli, Curator, Norwich Castle.
‘The Habit of Gazing and Writing’ George Szirtes 2023
What kinds of transformation do the landscapes and plant studies of John Crome (1768-1821), once considered the equal of J.M.W. Turner, undergo when translated into new ‘languages’ or media? The twenty contributors to this volume, from fields as diverse as travel-writing, poetry, photography and ceramics, provide a range of answers, and in so doing, uncover fresh futures for Crome’s work. Their contributions include both work already done and new work expressly created for the volume, and are accompanied by self-exploratory critical commentaries. Through these translations, Crome’s work finds itself with new ways of being and new ways of meaning.
The Editors: Andrew Moore, Ph.D., FSA, has enjoyed a long association with the work of John Crome through his former position as Keeper of Art, based at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, home to the national collection of works by Crome and the Norwich School of Painters. Clive Scott is Professor Emeritus of European Literature at the University of East Anglia and an Emeritus Fellow of the British Academy. He specializes in the theory and practice of literary translation.
The book is designed by Emily Benton and published by UEA Publishing Project.
