Turner’s Walton Bridges: Finding Stories

Join us in the gallery for a talk by Francesca Vanke, Senior Curator and Keeper of Fine and Decorative Art at Norwich Castle, about the magnificent painting by JMW Turner, Walton Bridges 1806.
In 2019, Walton Bridges was acquired for Norwich Castle when it became available after an overseas purchase was subject to an unexpected export stop. The painting was secured by Francesca’s National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, which included plans to hold a series of exhibitions around East Anglia in which the work will feature. Until Walton Bridges came to the Castle, there was no Turner oil painting in a public collection in Norfolk, Suffolk or Essex.
In this talk Francesca will discuss the work in detail, looking at some of the many stories which this beautiful landscape painting has to tell and explaining how she goes about exploring these themes for different audiences to enjoy.
