In Proximity brings together recent work by 87 artists based in East Anglia to explore experiences of closeness. It celebrates the ambitious scope of creative practice in the region and has been developed in partnership with EAAF.

The artworks on display delve into real and imagined relationships with the places, objects, people and other life forms that make up our surroundings. Shared concerns with the fragility, power and mystery of the natural world emerge in many of the works, while others focus on the meanings invested in materials and environments over time.

The exhibiting artists are Grace Adam, Christine Allman, Amanda Ansell, Gustavo Balbela, Keron Beattie, Jo Bellamy, Matthew Benington, Susan Bonvin, Neil Bousfield, Carolyn Brookes-Davies, Ruth Brumby, Emily Cannell, Claire Cansick, Noah Carter, Katarzyna Coleman, Jack Crampton, Jan Crombie, Nicki Darrell, Annabel Dover, Alex Egan, Tor Falcon, Victoria Fenn, Mike Fenton, Hayley Field, Caroline Fisher, Gwyneth Fitzmaurice, Craig Frost, David George, Rollo Timothy George, Helen Gilbart, Kate Giles, James Gladwell, Mike Goddard, Ed Halsey, Lindsay Harris, Lizzy Harvey, Cassie Herschel-Shorland, Barbara Howey, Clare Jarrett, Jacqui Jones, Jevan Watkins Jones, Jane Kearney, John Kiki, Lizzie Kimbley, Jennie Kimbley, Martin Kinnear, Natalie Lang, Louisa Longstaff-Scales, Jack Mackenzie, Anna MacRae, Angie Maddigan, John Maddison, Susan Maufe, Alison McFarlane, Niki Medlik, Mary Mellor, Elizabeth Merriman, James Metsoja, Martin Mitchell ARE, Justine Moss, Peter Nencini, Tessa Newcomb, Maria Pavledis, Raphaella Pester, Matt Phelps, Matthew Richardson, Rebecca Riess, Carl Rowe, Malca Schotten, Jill Sharpe, Jo Sharpe, Robert Sherratt, Julie Sleaford, Simon M Smith, Victoria Snazell, Nicky Stainton, Sophie Standford, Telfer Stokes, Nessie Stonebridge, Brenda Unwin, Philip Walmsley, Jack Wheeler, Simon Wilde, Phil Wilkinson, Emma Withers, Eleanor Wood and Caroline Wright.

Proceeds go directly to the artists and towards EAAF's continuing support for exhibitions and art education in the region.

It was a privilege to see the incredible range of work being made locally, proving how East Anglia supports the development of idiosyncratic and innovative artistic practices - and I very much look forward to seeing the final selection of works on display at the Castle in February 2026. Sarah Lowndes

Our work was included in the 2021 Norwich Open Show, and it is an honour to have been invited to join the selection panel for this year’s exhibition. It was a fascinating experience to see the breadth of work currently being made by fellow artists across East Anglia. The theme of In Proximity was very open and it is interesting how artists have responded to it – from exploring proximity to nature in both literal and imagined forms, to examining relationships with objects imbued with personal or historic significance, such as family heirlooms or archaeological artefacts that express a sense of closeness to people of the past. We are very much looking forward to seeing all the work brought together at the Castle. Daniel & Clara
