The day will be held at Norwich Synagogue and begins with a talk by Sophie Cabot, an archaeologist with a special interest in the Jewish heritage of Norwich. She will provide an introduction to the history and archaeology of the Jewish community in medieval Norwich, seen through the few surviving traces in objects, architecture, landscape and representations.
Dr Selina Brace, Principal Researcher at the Natural History Museum, will then focus on a discovery made in Norwich in 2004, when archaeologists unearthed 17 bodies which had been thrown into a medieval well (on the site of Chantry Place).
During the afternoon there will be a short talk by Dr Peter Prinsley, a member of the Norwich Hebrew Congregation who was closely involved with the amazing story of the discovery, the reburial and the subsequent scientific analysis of the bones. He will relate the story of the reburial at the Earlham Cemetery. Then he, together with Marian Prinsley, also a member of the Norwich Hebrew Congregation and closely involved with the reburial of the medieval bones, will take participants to the cemetery to view the site of this reburial.
The afternoon session will also include a guided view of the Synagogue with the chance to see items such as the scrolls and to hear about their history.
Tickets are £45 per person and include refreshments on arrival, lectures and lunch. Your host for the day is Faye Kalloniatis.
