Dr Francesca Vanke, one of the Curators of the wonderful exhibition The Last Voyage of the Gloucester at Norwich Castle, will conduct TWO special tours for EAAF members and their guests, providing a unique insight into the lives of those on board the Gloucester as they accompanied James Duke of York on their ill-fated voyage.
When the Gloucester embarked on its last voyage in May 1682, the heir to the throne was on board. We would therefore expect, alongside the utilitarian objects used by the ship’s crew, a number of higher-status artefacts for use by James and his courtiers, to enable them to undertake the journey in the manner to which they were accustomed.
Only a relatively small number of objects has been found so far, but as this exhibition shows, there are indeed clear indications that James and his friends were planning to enjoy their trip with good food, wine and music.
For this tour, Dr Francesca Vanke, Keeper of Art and one of the curators of the exhibition, explores the decorative art objects on the Gloucester, what has been found and what has not. She uses these to shed light on the style and character of the Stuart court, which is further borne out by the exuberant paintings in this exhibition.
