This December, indulge the Christmas spirit and join us for a talk by Dr Sarah Cassell and Professor Sandy Heslop, The Heavenly Host: Angels of Praise, Protection and Mediation in Medieval East Anglia.

Angels appear in the Bible in numerous guises: as messengers, guides, warriors and chorus. Accordingly, they occur frequently in medieval religious art in narrative contexts, most famously and frequently at the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. However, during the late Middle Ages they take on additional, often independent roles, playing musical instruments, carrying liturgical objects such as chalices or reminders of Christ’s Passion like the Crown of Thorns. Their dress becomes more varied too, from suits of armour to ecclesiastical vestments.

In this lecture we discuss some of the reasons for these developments and for their increasing appearances on ‘angel roofs’ and in stained glass, especially in East Anglia. We will conclude with a case study of the church of St Peter Hungate in Norwich c.1450 which exemplifies a high point in the representation of the Heavenly Host.

The event is £15 per person and includes tea and coffee, cake and a glass of madeira. Event hosted by Amanda Geitner and Emma Hazell.
