King’s Lynn was one of the largest and most prosperous ports on England’s east coast. From the early Middle Ages until the 18th century, Lynn’s trade centred on goods from Northern Europe, shipped in and out of the port by merchants from the once powerful Hanseatic League.
Join us as we follow Dr Paul Richards, King’s Lynn's leading historian and enthusiast, around ancient buildings associated with the port. The event concludes with contemporary art at the internationally renowned GroundWork Gallery.
Our day will begin at Marriott's Warehouse on the South Quay with an introduction by Charlotte Crawley and Dr Paul Richards. We will walk on to Trinity Guildhall to visit the Stone Hall, meeting place of the Merchants of Lynn, and then proceed to Tudor Thoresby College and on to The Hanse House, former warehouses and medieval home of the Hanseatic League Merchants.
We return to Marriott's Warehouse for a two-course lunch. The afternoon begins with a visit to the tower at Clifton House, (by kind permission of Drs Simon Thurley & Anna Keay), with the opportunity to climb the five storeys of Lynn’s last remaining merchant’s tower and experience the excellent view of the town and the River Great Ouse!
From there, we go to Groundwork Gallery where Dr. Veronica Sekules will talk about this acclaimed gallery which she established in 2017, and show us the exhibition The Ground Beneath our Feet.
Tickets are £65 per person and include refreshments and lunch. The event will involve quite a lot of walking, but in a fairly confined area. The day is organised and hosted by Sarah Greenall & Charlotte Crawley.
