Dr Andrew Moore
Thomas Coke: A Few Weeks in Venice and Padua, August & September 1714
In lockdown Andrew Moore has had a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into his research and writing for his book on Thomas Coke’s grand tour (1712-1718) and its impact on the creation of Holkham Hall: its architecture and collections. Andrew’s research is based on the account books of the tour, which trace Coke’s daily progress: the places he visited, the people he met and the experience of travelling through Europe at that time. There are barely any letters and no journal of the tour that survive and so he has been working mainly from early travel guidebooks that shaped the experiences of travellers as well as his own library and research resources on the internet. He says it has been a perfect way to armchair travel under lockdown.
